Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from an early age Residente became interested in art, music and leftist politics. He studied art at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia, then returned to Puerto Rico in 2003 to work on music with his half-brother Visitante, with whom he founded Calle 13.
